Headache Triggers and Migraines
Headaches change over the years, very often getting worse because one will cause imflammation and it’s hard to keep from getting another one after that. It’s worse the more you have. Headache pain comes from the nerves in the blood vessels inside the brain and outside the skull and the muscles of the head and neck. Migraine pain typically is related to the nerves in blood vessels while tension type headaches are related to the muscles in the head and neck. Headache almost always starts in my right temple. My brother, by the way, has never had a headache or an aura. Trigger avoidance is one form of treatment and may require lifestyle changes, such as diet modification. There are also many drugs for symptomatic control and also, preventative drugs. Triggers potentially range from cigarette smoke to salami. Talk to your doctor about what you suspect might be triggering your migraines, if anything. Women who use acute pain-relief medicine more than two or three times a week or more than 10 days out of the month can set off a cycle called rebound. As each dose of medicine wears off, the pain comes back, leading the patient to take even more. Women classified as having migraines that began prior to pregnancy had a 3.5-fold increased risk for preeclampsia (95% CI 1.9–6.4) as compared with those who reported no migraines. Women with migraines during pregnancy had a fourfold increased risk of preeclampsia compared with non-migraineurs. Women got migraine when they were pregnant, or when they were stressed. Men rarely experienced migraine, according to the common belief. Sufferers of migraine headaches sometimes report a phenomenon that amounts to color-blindness. Sufferers often experience nausea, vomiting and ultra-sensitivity to light. The next phase often is numbness on one side of the face, and possibly dizziness or problems speaking. Changes in the brain may cause changes in the blood flow. Also contributing to migraines are brain chemicals called neurotransmitters and channels in nerve cells that regulate the movement of minerals across them. Changes in the neurons act upon areas that control pain and the flow of blood in vessels of the head and neck. This can cause inflammation of certain nerves and make the blood vessels in the brain either tighten or swell. Auras are one type of premonition. They cause changes in sight and often come in the form of pulsating light, or blurred vision. Auras last about 15 to 30 minutes. Auras may occur before or after your head pain, and sometimes the pain and aura overlap, or the pain never occurs.
